Auditions for 2011-2012 Debut Season
Auditions begin June 1st for the Portland Youth Rock Orchestra
Portland Oregon—The Portland Youth Rock Orchestra will begin holding auditions for its debut 2011-2012 season starting June 1st at various locations in and around Portland. Electric guitarists, drummers, bassists and all traditional orchestral musicians ages 7-23 are encouraged to audition.
The Portland Youth Rock Orchestra will give students from all over the metropolitan area focused musical training and exposure to the greatest of rock and orchestral literature. The rehearsals will be framed within a fun and energetic environment with numerous opportunities to work with professional musicians. The Portland Youth Rock Orchestra will present multiple concerts a year crossing musical boundaries between traditional classical music and contemporary rock genres.
During the audition process, candidates will be asked to play two contrasting pieces of their choice that demonstrate their current skill level. Successful candidates will exhibit the following skills: strong sense of rhythm, intonation and mastery of scales. Musicality, including tone, dynamic variety, articulation, range and shifting, basic technique will also be evaluated. The musician search will continue until all chairs for the Rock Orchestra are filled. Those who do not qualify for the Rock Orchestra may be considered for one of several Chamber-Rock Ensembles that are designed to develop and prepare musicians for performing at higher skill levels.
Founded by a group of arts supporters including Portland-based guitar veteran and educator Brent Gunter, the Portland Youth Rock Orchestra’s debut season will begin September 2011 and continue through May 2012. Its mission is to inspire, educate and develop students from a wide range of musical backgrounds into confident, open-minded and highly skilled musicians. The Portland Youth Rock Orchestra and its Chamber-Rock Ensembles will be open to students ages 7-23. Musicians will be selected by audition starting June 1st.
