“Doubt” is set in 1964 at St. Nicholas, Catholic Church and school in the Bronx, New York. St. Nicholas School has just admitted its first African American student, Donald Muller, and Sister Aloysius, the school’s principal, is concerned that Father Flynn might be making improper advances toward the boy. Father Flynn is adamant in his denial of wrongdoing while Sister Aloysius is certain that he is guilty. When should we stand firm in our beliefs and when must we allow a measure of uncertainty into our thinking?
Father Brendan Flynn – Caucasian priest at St. Nicholas Church. From a working class background. He is well-liked in the community and popular with the boys at St. Nicholas School. His views on religion are more modern for his time. Accused by Sister Aloysius of having an inappropriate relationship with an African American student, Donald Muller.
Mrs. Muller – African American, mother to Donald Muller, the boy Father Flynn is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with. She has learned to accept what she has and to work with it.
