Synopsis:
“Rikers Island Psalm” is about a young man who is soon to be on parole. However, he is not taking his parole seriously, so a group of fellow inmates facing various sentences grab him and talk to him (with a prison mediator) about appreciating life on the outside and how to survive in order to NOT return to prison.

Characters

[MEDIATOR] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 40s]

The Mediator desires for the older inmates to impart wisdom on the young parolee; believes strongly in the each one, teach one philosophy

[BURGLAR] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 50s]

The Burglar has a long record of breaking and entering; realized that the need to burglarize was deeper than the material goods acquired – in reality the act fed on the accumulations of others as the sole purpose of satisfaction

[FELON [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 60s]

The Felon is a lifer that converted to Islam and found Allah in prison; recognizes he was a victim of a corrupt society, but also takes responsibility for his actions

[ARSONIST] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 30s]

The Arsonist is angry about being a child surrounded by the destruction of personal property; committed his crime due to revenge, anger, hatred, and fury; Understands what he’s done was wrong, but is not totally remorseful

[RAPIST] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 40s]

The Rapist hates women and rap music is the self-chosen soundtrack of his life; he comes from a family decorated with domestic violence. He’s beginning to understand that his perception of women is objectification and that addiction has been taught to him by society and the events he witnessed within his own family as a small child

[PAROLEE] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: early 20s]

The Parolee is hard headed, disrespectful, and is annoyed to even be involved in this session. He is a little boy in a man’s body acting tough with a false bravado that houses fear, confusion, and a lack of guidance
