STORY
Stir is a story about a busy lawyer mourns her mother’s death by inviting family for a traditional Indo-Persian feast but her hope of connecting with an old legacy is confounded by being clueless in the kitchen and instead of finding comfort in tradition, she questions her marriage and life
choices, until a secret from her mother unravels and restores her balance.

8 minute narrative, short drama

ROLES: ALL ACTORS MUST BE ACTRA

AUDITION DATE: THURSDAY MAY 21, 2015 2:30pm-6:30pm at Creation Lab – Blake Studio – 720 Bathurst Street
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
M5S 2R4

Main Characters:

LAILA MISTRY: 42 year old lawyer, mother and wife of Indo-Persian origin. The look is Mediterranean more than Indian since the Parsis of India originate in ancient Iran and look more like Greeks, Italians or
Turks.

BEN KAPLAN : 40 years “ish” Laila’s husband and father to Jay – of Jewish origin but it isn’t overtlystated in the script. Ben simply doesn’t share her ethnic roots – but he saves the day by learning her
heritage. He isn’t as wound up as Laila. Loves her and Jay madly and has a career in the arts.

JAY MISTRY KAPLAN: 12 year old daughter of Laila and Ben. She’s an only child with two strong, complex parents. Jay is fun, loving and finely tuned to both parents.

MRS. PATEL: 45 and recognizably Indian is the owner of the grocery store with a contemporary flair. Comfortable in her skin and rooted in her own culture – she is the counter point to Laila’s confusion
around her heritage and both of them know it.

MEHER MISTRY: 39 and Laila’s younger sister. Single and fulfilled by her career. She dotes on her family but has never had one of her own. She has brought her BOYFRIEND of some time with her to the
gathering.

BACKGROUND ROLES:

NANA: Deceased mother to Laila and Meher. We see her as a young woman (30’s) in photos and briefly in the Market in Little India when we go into Laila’s perspective of seeing her mother on the street. A force
who dominates the story but is never visually present onscreen barring a fleeting moment.

MEHER’S BOYFRIEND – A relaxed, confident 40 year old who is comfortable with Meher and her family. Ideally, he should also have a Mediterranean look.

AUNTIE & UNCLE – An older couple in their 50’s who are friends of the family. THEIR ethnicity is not crucial but a middle eastern look.

Five background Extras in the market – Including one extra who drives a car that blocks Laila’s view. Please submit all ethnicities.
