Based on a true story: It’s 1940 and America is still struggling out of the Great Depression. Granite City is a town divided. The Depression has hardly touched the town’s wealthy elite, but for the town’s immigrant poor, it’s a far different story. Under the auspices of their teacher and mentor, feisty SOPHIE PRATHER, the immigrant boys in the Lincoln Park gang — including HUGGY, ANDY, and EVON — find an alternative to the mean streets in Sophia’s newly opened youth center, where they gather to practice the sport of basketball.

Later, this “band of brothers” are the first immigrants allowed into the town’s elite high school, where they are initially met with resistance and suspicion. Coached by a reluctant, somewhat disenchanted head COACH BOZARTH, the boys win their way onto the school varsity basketball team, break the team’s sad losing streak and score a series of unprecedented victories, the line between rich and poor begins to blur, as the entire community embraces the spunky immigrant kids, cheering them on all the way to a championship..
