Casting call for teen extras in New Orleans and Vacherie Louisiana.
A new TV series is filming in Louisiana and has a casting call out for extras and dancers in the area.
Ava DuVernay is directing a new TV series headed for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN cable channel. OWN has ordered 13 episodes of the new show which is currently titled “Queen Sugar.” “Queen Sugar” is based on a Natalie Baszile’s novel of the same name and is being described as a contemporary series chronicling a woman’s struggle to re-build an aging sugarcane farm.
After getting word that they had inherited a sugarcane farm in Louisiana, a mother and daughter decide to leave big city life and move to the 800 acre farm. “Queen Sugar” is created, directed and executive produced by “Selma” director, Ava DuVernay. In 2014 DuVernay and Winfrey worked on “Selma” together. DuVernay directed the project about the civil rights movement of the 60s and received an Academy Award nomination that year.
In a Deadline article, DuVernay commented about the upcoming show saying “From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history,” she added, “To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful.”
Oprah Winfrey is executive producing the show alongside DuVernay and there is rumor that we may see Winfrey in an acting role on “Queen Sugar” as well. The production announced that Rutina Wesley had been cast in the leading role of Nova Bordelon. Also in the cast are Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Kofi Siriboe, and Omar Dorsey, who co-starred in “Selma” as well.
This films in the NOLA area and is only considering local talent.
