“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” casting many extras and featured extras.
The Oprah Winfrey produced feature is now filming in the Atlanta area and there are casting calls for various small, non-speaking roles.
Oprah Winfrey and HBO have teamed up to for “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” The upcoming project is based on the nonfiction book of the same name written by Rebecca Skloot. According to deadline, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” has been a passion project for the Oscar-nominated actress. Winfrey teamed with Six Feet Under and True Blood creator Alan Ball to produce the feature film adaptation of Skloot’s novel with HBO Films. Last May, Deadline also reported that Oprah Winfrey is also starring in the project. George C. Wolfe will direct the film. Tony Award winning Hamilton star Renée Elise Goldsberry also stars in the film opposite Oprah Winfrey as Henrietta Lacks.
Skloot’s novel is about Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman, and the true story behind the immortal cell line, known as HeLa, that came from Lacks’s cervical cancer cells in 1951. The story is told through the eyes of her daughter, Deborah Lacks who will be played by Oprah Winfrey. The film chronicles Lack’s desire to learn about the mother she never knew. The book also chronicles how the unauthorized harvesting of Lacks’ cancer cells led to medical breakthroughs that changed medicine forever as well as countless lives.
According to the books Wiki page…. The book is notable for its science writing and dealing with ethical issues of race and class in medical research. Skloot said that some of the information was taken from the journal of Deborah Lacks, Henrietta Lacks’s daughter, as well as from “archival photos and documents, scientific and historical research.”
