DESCRIPTION OF PIECE
“Ship of Dreams: Kanrin Maru -150 Years of Hope, Struggle, and Friendship” is an original dance/theater piece that is being produced by Mary Sano, of Mary Sano Studios (http://www.duncandance.org/) in collaboration with writers, actors, dancers and musicians. This new work, which is to be performed at the Brava Theater in San Francisco in December of 2010, is one of many celebrations taking place this year to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Kanrin Maru voyage, which brought the first Japanese emissaries to the US in 1860. This collaborative piece will utilize live music, acting, and dance to tell the historical tale and contemporary significance of the Kanrin Maru voyage, while simultaneously interweaving personal stories and challenges in the Japanese-American experience.
