Playhouse 22, East Brunswick’s Community Theater, will be having open auditions for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street on Monday August 15, Wednesday August 17 and Sunday August 21 at 7:30 p.m. Callbacks by invitation only, Monday August 22.
The show dates are October 28 – November 13, 2011. All shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
Auditions will be held at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center, 721 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, NJ 08816. The show will be directed by Mark Kalet; musical direction by Rory Chalcraft and choreography by Megan Ferentinos
Sweeney Todd tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe!
Performers are asked to prepare a song in the appropriate key (16 bars, no songs from this show or other Sondheim shows please), bring sheet music. A short scene from the show will be provided to read.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
(Ages are approximate and refer to look rather than actual age, some actors will play multiple roles)
SWEENEY TODD (Baritone/Bass) – 40-55 – A talented barber with a bloodthirsty need for revenge. A physically imposing man with magician’s hands.
MRS. LOVETT (Alto with a good low range) – 40-55 – An entrepreneurial shop owner with a diabolical passion for pies… and Todd.
ANTHONY HOPE (Tenor) – 18-20 – A young man who returns to London and sets his heart on Johanna, Todd’s daughter.
JOHANNA (Soprano) – 16 – Judge Turpin’s young, lovely ward and Todd’s long-lost daughter. Innocent and aching to free herself from Turpin’s grasp.
JUDGE TURPIN (Baritone) – 45-60 – A corrupt and lecherous official who hides in the guise of sanctimonious honor.
THE BEADLE (Tenor) – 40-55 – A pompous public official whose real loyalty is only to the corrupt Turpin.
PIRELLI (Tenor) – 35-45 – A flamboyant Italian with a secret past. A charlatan and rival barber.
BEGGAR WOMAN (Soprano) – 35-55 – A deranged and schizophrenic woman with a secret.
TOBIAS RAGG (Tenor) – 14-24 – A young boy who is apprenticed to Pirelli, but finds a strange, surrogate family in Todd and Mrs. Lovett.
JONAS FOGG (Ensemble) – 40-80 – The owner of Fogg’s sanitarium.
An Ensemble of 11-16 people to play several speaking/non-speaking roles: Townspeople, Lords, Ladies, Policemen, Lunatics, etc
Also needed: A “Johanna dance quartet” – 4 women of similar size to dance as Johanna in silhouette.
