The Oscar-nominated filmmaker will be focusing on Black-on-Black violence in the film with a focus on Chicago’s South side. Cast members include Kanye West, Jeremy Piven, Samuel L. Jackson and hip-hop artist Common. The title, “Chiraq” refers to a time (2003–2011) when the murder rate in Chicago was higher than the casualty count in the Iraq war which left more Americans dead in the city than in the war zone. The film’s title has been an area of controversy in the city. Some local council members and the Mayor oppose the title fearing that the word “Chiraq” has a negative feel to it and does not represent the Chicago of today.
