A Stage Play Dramedy about A Single & Celibate Mother Struggling to be a good Parent, Professional and find a life Partner

Location: Le Madeleine Restaurant- 14028 N US Hwy 183-Austin, Texas

Type: Theater

“Coming Up Short” is a dramatic comedy about a recently divorced, African American, single mother who struggles to re-enter the workforce and the dating scene with 2 caveats; a recent vow of celibacy after finding religion, and an outdated college degree. Compounding her new life is the challenge of raising her headstrong teenage son who is a ladies’ man, and her daughter (niece by birth) and keep it all in balance. Nikita fortunately meets the man of her dreams with 1 small caveat, his physical features are not quite what she’d imagined.

Roles:

(Nikita) A tall (at least 5ft 7in) 35-43yo African American female with a strong and confident, no-nonsense attitude, but loving and witty. She can recite poetry and rap to a beat.

(Jimmy) A 15-17yo African American ladies’ man who is defiant and stubborn with his mother Nikita, but is at times respectful and supportive. He is also very humorous and animated.
(Rain) A 6-12yo, African American, precocious peacemaker who entertains herself with the family’s drama. She struggles in school and to read, but otherwise is smart as a whip.

(Grandma) A saucy, African American or West Indian, flirtatious old lady with a fresh mouth and irreverent sense of humor. She is relevant, loving, wise, grounded and hearing impaired. She can also dance (hysterically)

(John) None specific race. This character is between the age of 25 and 45. He is a tall, fit, handsome, flirtatious ladies’ man who is clueless about what it means to be a gentleman. He is at least 6 feet tall and suave with a nice smile. John is also humorous and animated.

(Janice) None specific race. Janice is between the age of 25 and 45. She is protective, supportive and sweet and is trying her hand as a novice matchmaker.

(Mr. Short) (A man of color; Asian, Latino, African American) He is a short, confident, handsome, friendly and fit businessman who finds himself in love with Nikita. He is between 5’0 and 5’6. He can also sing…well.
