This is an urgent casting call for a low budget school production.
Introduction: We are a group of third-year students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, currently pursuing a diploma in Mass Communication. We would truly appreciate it if you could act for our final-year project!
Plot: This is a story about the touching bond between an introverted and lonely young boy, and his kindly neighbour, ‘mak cik’. The boy and his mother, the only family he has ever known, live in debt and constant fear of loan sharks. The boy is neglected by his mother. One day, the fragrance of his neighbour’s cooking prompts the starving boy to her door. This is the beginning of an unlikely friendship that would change both their lives.
Cast: The boy and his neighbour, ‘mak cik’, will be the two leading characters.
1. Boy
Apparent Age: 6 – 10 years old
Race: Chinese
Personality: A shy and soft-spoken, but curious individual. He is very mature for his age.
2. Boy’s Neighbour (‘Mak cik’)
Apparent Age: 50 – 65 years old
Race: Malay
Personality: Warm-hearted, affectionate, and generous. She is always ready to lend a helping hand.
3. Boy’s Mother
Apparent Age: 35 – 40 years old
Race: Chinese
Personality: A single mother who is addicted to gambling. She works hard to pay off her debts and support her son, but neglects him.
