Jewish Theater Auditions in Toronto, Canada for “Broadway Bound” By Neil Simon

AUDITION: TEATRON Toronto Jewish Theatre, is seeking actors for their upcoming production:

BROADWAY BOUND by Neil Simon, directed by Ari Weisberg.

Performance Dates: June 3-11, 2020.
Rehearsal dates: May 2020.
Performances at: Meridian Arts Centre (Formerly Toronto Centre for the Arts) – Studio Theatre5040 Yonge Street, Toronto.

Broadway Bound Synopsis: The play, set in 1949 in Brighton Beach, is about Eugene and his older brother, Stanley dealing with their parents’ relationship falling apart as the brothers work together toward being comedy writers for radio and, eventually television.

Character Breakdown: Eugene Morris Jerome– Younger brother – Male, (20-30). The play’s narrator an focal character who cares deeply about everyone in the family (Neil Simon’s semi autobiographical character) Carefree, witty and quick to joke, works in the stockroom of a music company before he and his brother Stanley break out as comedy writers for a tv show.

Stanley Jerome– Older brother – (25-35) Neurotic, high strung, works as manager of boy’s clothing at Abraham and Straus, and joins with Eugene to form a comedy writing team.

Kate Jerome – Female 50ish – Eugene and Stanley’s mother. Strong women who values family and family values – a traditionalist, also caring for her father Ben who lives with them. From the beginning of the play is aware of her husband Jack’s affair and confronts him over it,standing her ground when he admits it.

Jack Jerome – Male. 50-55 -. Kate’s husband, Eugene and Stanley’s father. A clothier, he is not an affectionate man who has become a bit numb to life and by the start of the play has had and off and on again affair. Irate at his son’s portrayal of the family’s situation on radio, and put in his place by Stanley for his indiscretions, he leaves Kate and the end of the play.

Ben Epstein – Male – 75 – 80ish. A born socialist and ardent follower of Trotsky, Kate’s father lives with them. The brothers find him a wealth of material for their comedy. He cares deeply about his daughters but as a socialist is not an affectionate man. He will not join his semi-estranged wife who has gone to live in Miami and battles with his daughter Blanche overgiving in to capitalist society.

Blanche Morton – Female 48-52 – Kate’s sister, remarried and now well to do, lives on Park Avenue. Through her conversations with Ben, we learn of the real situation between Jack and Kate.
