Aida is possibly one of the greatest grand operas ever written – regularly performed right around the world. It’s enduring popularity with opera-lovers and first-timers is a testament to the power of the music which, in this production, will be performed with the full orchestration.

?It was first performed in 1871 but Verdi considered it’s 1872 premiere in Milan, Italy it’s true opening night. Since then, it has been part of every opera company’s repertoire – without break.

CHARACTERS:

?Aida – Soprano, Ethiopian princess, enslaved to Egypt.

?Radamès – Tenor, Captain of the Egyptian Guard, later a General.

?Amneris – Mezzo Soprano, princess of Egypt and daughter of the King.

?Amonasro – Baritone, Aida’s father and king of the Ethiopians.

?Ramfis – Bass, High Priest of Egypt.

?Il Re (the King) – Bass-Baritone, the Pharaoh.

?Messenger – Tenor, young and poor messenger who has run a long way – suits a young singer.

?High Priestesses 1 and 2 – Sopranos, in charge of the Temple of Ptah – suits a young singer.

Chorus – Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Basses – playing the Royal Egyptian Court, the High Priests and Priestesses, Prisoners, Slaves, Guards and the people of Egypt.
