CHARACTERS
Doris
Initial meeting (1951): She is a 24-year-old, naive, and somewhat timid housewife from Oakland. She has a reserved, guilt-ridden demeanor after their first tryst.
Later years: She undergoes significant personal growth and transformation.
She evolves into an astute businesswoman.
In the 1960s, she embraces a “hippie” phase, complete with a counterculture attitude and bohemian style, shocking the more conservative George.
By the 1970s, she matures, gaining confidence and wisdom from her life experiences.
George
Initial meeting (1951): He is a 27-year-old, neurotic accountant from New Jersey. He is more of a “bumbling” romantic who feels guilty and carries the weight of the affair on his shoulders.
Later years: His personality and political views shift over time.
In the 1960s, he becomes more conservative.
His neurotic tendencies often make him a source of comedy.
He becomes a widower later in life and proposes marriage to Doris, who refuses out of respect for her husband.
