Aurora Community Theatre announces auditions for their production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike!

SIBLINGS. SECRETS. CHAOS. What could possibly go wrong?

Audition sign-ups are NOW OPEN for the first show of our 2027 season: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike!

When their glamorous movie-star sister returns home with her much younger boyfriend, a quiet weekend erupts into hilarious sibling rivalry after she announces plans to sell the family home.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

VANYA
Age: 50s to mid-60s
Description: Vanya lives a quiet, uneventful life in the Bucks County farmhouse, where he spent years caring for his aging parents alongside Sonia. He is gay, dry, sardonic, and highly intelligent. He acts as the peace-maker between his squabbling sisters, tends to avoid conflict, and feels a deep nostalgia for the past. Resigned to his routine, he fears major changes. Requires strong comedic timing, exceptional language skills, and the ability to anchor the emotional core of the show.

SONIA
Age: Early 50s to mid-60s
Description: Vanya’s adopted sister, living in the same house. She frequently reminds everyone that she was adopted and is deeply discontent, regretful, and insecure. She feels plain and harbors deep resentment and jealousy toward her glamorous sister, Masha. Fragile and dramatic, Sonia is at a breaking point, ready to see if there is more to her life. Requires strong emotional vulnerability, excellent comedic timing, and facility with a dialect (often a Maggie Smith-style British accent for her big party scene).

MASHA
Age: Late 40s to 50s
Description: Vanya and Sonia’s sister, and a hugely successful, glamorous international movie star. Masha pays the bills for the household, but she is completely self-absorbed, flamboyant, and prone to dramatic mood swings. Deeply insecure about aging and losing her youth, she is blissfully unaware of the emotional toll her diva behavior takes on her siblings. Requires a commanding presence, big star quality, and high-energy comedic chops.

SPIKE
Age: Late 20s to 30s
Description: Masha’s much younger, gorgeous, dim-witted new boyfriend and an aspiring actor. He is hyper-confident, sexy, and intensely self-absorbed, flirting flippantly with both men and women. While not particularly bright, he has moments of unexpected charm. Requires strong physical condition, great comedic timing, and the actor must be entirely comfortable appearing in their underwear multiple times.

NINA (Supporting)
Age: Early 20s
Description: A lovely, star-struck, and deeply sincere young woman visiting her aunt and uncle next door. An aspiring actress, she is energetic, open, and heavily mirrors the optimism of Nina from Chekhov’s The Seagull. She serves as a gentle, bright contrast to the middle-aged angst of the siblings.

CASSANDRA (Supporting)
Age: Any age
Description: The household’s outspoken cleaning woman and self-proclaimed soothsayer. Like her Greek mythological namesake, she is prone to making wild, dramatic, and genuinely correct prophecies about the future—which the family completely ignores. She is a firm believer in voodoo. Requires a strong physical comedian with high-energy, eccentric stage presence, and great comic timing.
