From the creative team that brought you the W.A.T.C.H. nominated “The Color Purple”, The Tantallon Community Players Presents “The Wiz.”
The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical “Wonderful Wizard of Oz” is a musical with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls and book by William F. Brown. It is a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of African-American culture. The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical was an early example of Broadway’s mainstream acceptance of works with an all-black cast. The musical has had revivals in New York, London, San Diego and the Netherlands, and a limited-run revival was presented by Encores! at New York City Center in June 2009. A film adaptation was released in 1978.
Directed by Rikki Hoiwe ( Aint’ Misbehaven, Smokey Joe’s Café), with Music Direction by LeVar Betts (The Color Purple), Choreography by Taurean Maray Barber (The Color Purple, Dreamgirls), Staged Managed By Jared Shamberger (The Color Purple) and produced by Jivon Lee Jackson (The Color Purple, Smokey Joes Café), this production promises to be an interpretation that audiences have never seen.
Auditions are February 24 and 25 at Harmony Hall Regional Center (10701 Livingston Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744).
Those who would like to audition should prepare 16-bars of a song selection (with sheet music preferably) and come prepared to dance and read potential sides cold.
