CHARACTER BIOs

REY, ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER MALE, AGE 25-28 – fits uncomfortably within the rapid changes to his life over the past 10 years. Married with kids, he always looks forward to unwinding (and rewinding the clock) with his high school pals once a week, but is now faced with his first real test at being a “good” father.

WILMER, ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER MALE, AGE 25-28 – is a high school pal of Rey; who hasn’t changed much in the past ten years. Still the loud-mouthed, overly macho stoner he has always been, and still secretly in love with Maricel — who is now Rey’s wife.

MANNY, ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER MALE, AGE 25-28 – is another high school pal of Rey. Manny has grown more conservative over the years. His opinions are good-natured but based on his traditional views as a Christian.

JOJO, ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER MALE, AGE 5-7 – is a creative boy who can’t stop exploring his world and imagining new ones. JoJo is neither masculine nor effeminate. When he daydreams of the Singkil, he sees himself as the Warrior Prince and then the Princess. There is neither shame nor pride in his thoughts, nor any labels – his mind is free to be playful and joyful.

MARICEL, ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER FEMALE, AGE 25-28 (non-speaking role) – Singkil dancer featured in flashback scenes. She will be wearing traditional Philippine Singkil wardrobe. Dancing skills are helpful but not necessary.

SYNOPSIS: “PRINSESA” is the story of Rey, a 28-yr-old Filipino-American father who tells the Singkil folk dance tale to his children to calm them after a small earthquake. However, his 5-yr-old son seems to identify more with the Princess in the myth than the Prince. This creates an awkward moment for Rey who is now having his own masculinity and parenting skills questioned by his pals.
