PERFORMERS NEEDED for Desirée Holman exhibition at di Rosa (Napa)
Desirée Holman, an Oakland-based artist and 2008 SFMOMA SECA Award winner, will present a large-scale performance as an extension of her solo exhibition Sophont in Action at di Rosa in Napa this summer.
Sophont in Action explores the overlapping terrain of New Age mysticism and science fiction. The artist investigates the iconography and aesthetics associated with these realms—including aliens, auras, and time travelers—to examine the space where fantasy can reveal truth. The exhibition emerges from the artist’s long-standing interest in the communal uses of technology to fulfill our desires for creative, spiritual, and social fulfillment. Oscillating between terrestrial and extraterrestrial, and new and old ages, Holman’s work speaks largely to our culturally developed conceptions of “otherness” and the shaping of identity in an ever-mystifying universe.
We are currently casting a range of individuals for this performance. Spaces are filling up fast, so please make sure to reply as soon as you can be able to participate.
The performance will be held on June 28th, 2014. You must be available from the late afternoon into the evening and have your own reliable transportation. There will also be an initial cast meeting on April 8th, 4pm-6pm as well as five rehearsal dates that are required in order to participate:
• Tuesday May 27th 3-6pm
• Tuesday June 3rd 3-6pm
• Tuesday June 10th 3-6pm
• Tuesday June 17th 3-6pm
• Tuesday June 24th 3-6pm
We are looking to fill 40 roles consisting of 4 general characters. Prior performance experience is not required, but definitely welcomed. All performers must be physically able to perform low impact choreography for 1 – 2 hours. Please review the character roles below to see if any would be a good fit for you. 1. CONSCIOUS/ECSTATIC DANCERS
-All ages, genders and races.
-Ideally want a mix of ecstatic dancers, pro dancers, actors, and amateur dancers.
Description: The conscious/ecstatic dancer subsumes the energy of the mythologies of technological utopia in question. They enact on a highly conscious level the interpretation of these thoughts of future, past and present selves.
2. INDIGO CHILDREN
-Ages 7 – 13.
-Agreement with application of non-toxic dye on hands.
-Adult supervision at all times. There is no separate dressing room for children, only for men and women.
-Ability to focus on performance and have fun.
Description: Born after 1981, these digital natives are examples of the techno-advanced intelligence that may bring to light a new formula for peaceful cooperation with emotive technologies. These characters have traits of indigo blue hands.
3. TIME TRAVELERS
-Ages 65 – 85.
-Agreement to wear headgear costume for 1-2 hours. These costumes are very fragile and must be worn with great care.
Description:
A psychic-fiction hybrid of human. Hardware enabled futurists who use their inherent psychic and telepathic human force to drive the machines they create. These characters wear Psionics Helmets with kinetic abilities.
4. GUIDES
-All ages, genders and races.
-Availability for last two – three rehearsals and performance day.
-Ability to walk up to one mile within a 1 hour span.
Description:
Wearing extra helmets in all white or all black. They do not talk unless absolutely necessary. Using gesturing and other body language, they direct the audience both in terms of movement along planned out paths and to keep quiet.
In return for your generosity of time and commitment, we will offer a modest honorarium and snacks and refreshments on performance day. Please note that there will be two dressing rooms, male and female, on June 28th. Please keep in mind we are looking for volunteers in and around Sonoma and Napa County.
