Honors Thesis Project – Once On This Island

Once On This Island is the story of a peasant girl, Ti Moune, who longs for a more glamorous life. She catches the attention of the wily gods that watch over her island, and falls madly in love with an injured man named Daniel, the rich heir of the Hotel Beauxhomme. The gods orchestrate a journey for her, to see if she can prove that her love is strong enough to endure any trial. The show addresses themes of inequality and prejudice based on the situations that people are born in.
This production is a special production for an Honors Thesis for Arizona State University. It will be cast blind. Actors will audition with an audio recording and judged on vocal performance, NOT on looks or on “type.” Actors of all ages, shapes, sizes, types, and genders are encouraged to audition for ALL of the roles. The director and the production team also encourage all actors to throw out any preconceived notions of what their “type” may be and send an audition to us! The overall goal of the project is to throw out ideas of typecasting, and casting based on looks or body shape.

2 contrasting 16-bar cuttings in the style of the show. Do NOT prepare anything from the show itself. Please also prepare a contemporary monologue, 90 SECONDS OR LESS. Callback materials will be provided via email to those called back.
Please submit your recordings to Caitlin at the above email ON OR BEFORE JUNE 9. Recordings must be AUDIO ONLY. Please try to get as clear a recording of your speaking and singing voice as you can. Resume not necessary. PLEASE DO NOT SEND A HEADSHOT. It does not matter what you look like at all for this project! Step out of your box and just sing for us!
Dance callback will be held JUNE 10. Singing/acting callbacks will be held JUNE 11.
