Will Smith’s New Film “Concussion” Has a New Call out for Extras in PA

By | December 2, 2014

Will Smith’s new football film is casting in the Pittsburgh area.

The previously untitled project seems to now be using the working title of “Concussion” and has been filming in the Pittsburgh area this month. The movie will be in production in the Pittsburgh PA area into January and is in need of some paid movie extras for scenes filming next week.

The new film is inspired by a 2009 article in GQ Magazine titled “Game Brain“, written by Jeanne Marie Laskas. The article described the findings of Dr. Bennett Omalu about a condition called CTE which he attributed to the game of football and players suffering a series of head injuries. Dr. Bennet Omalu came across the condition after an autopsy on football player, Mike Webster, revealed the players past brain injuries that may have had a connection to his erratic behavior before his death. The retired player had sustained hundreds of brain injuries which he believed caused tangles of proteins to form inside his brain. The Nigerian born doctor received a lot of criticism from the NFL after he published his findings. Dr. Omalu also wrote the book, “Play Hard, Die Young: Football Dementia, Depression and Death” in which he described the condition and talked about the link CTE may have to suicide.

Extras Casting Call for new Will Smith movie in PA

“Let’s say you run a multibillion-dollar football league. And let’s say the scientific community — starting with one young pathologist in Pittsburgh and growing into a chorus of neuroscientists across the country — comes to you and says concussions are making your players crazy, crazy enough to kill themselves, and here, in these slices of brain tissue, is the proof. Do you join these scientists and try to solve the problem, or do you use your power to discredit them?”

The film is backed by Sony Pictures. Will Smith will star as Dr. Omalu .  THR reports that Paul Riesner, Alec Baldwin and  Albert Brooks are also on board for the new film which is being produced by Ridley Scott’s Scotfree production company. According to a Deadline story, Grimm star Bitsie Tulloch is also reported to have joined the cast. “Concussion” will be directed by Parkland’s  Peter Landesman who is also writing for the project.
