Black Man in America Dance Film: Seeing Black boys, actors/dancers, 6-9 y/o

THE PROJECT: Black Man in America is a two-minute dance film, about Black people’s joy and perseverance despite the attacks on their bodies. The soundtrack to the film will be excerpts from “Black Man in America” by Johnny Hobbes. *The cast and crew are all Black artists. We have an agreement to distribute the film on Blavity (160,000 Likes on Facebook) and we plan to distribute the film on HuffPost Black Voices, and other digital media outlets representing young Black voices.

STYLE OF DANCE: Style is amplified human or pedestrian movement.

THE ROLE: This opportunity is to audition to perform as one of the 5-6 young Black boys that are the younger versions of the 5-6 main, black male dancers. The young dancers will be acting and dancing (pedestrian or human movement style) involving play and being afraid.

DANCERS: Six to nine year old Black boys who are either actors or dancers are invited to audition for the “Black Man in America” dance film. Dancers/actors must be skilled at showing emotion through the whole body & must be responsive to direction.

THE AUDITION/WORKSHOP: The audition will be on Sunday, July 23rd from 12pm – 2pm (note: if you cannot attend this audition and are still interested, please e-mail me with your materials and the reason why you cannot attend the audition). Dancers will be pre-screened for the audition (see below).

PAY: If selected, dancers’ parents will receive a $100 gift for their involvement in the film. If more funds become available, we will offer an additional $100-200.

DATES:
Two Rehearsals will take place on:
Sunday, July 30th: 4pm-6pm
Saturday, August 5th: 2pm – 4pm
Film shoot will tentatively take place on:
Sunday, August 6th: 9am – 9pm (dancers will be called only for two hours)
NOTE: The film shoot day has not yet been confirmed. Because we want to have a few options for filming days, please ensure you are available the following dates:
Saturday, August, 12th: 9am – 9pm (two hour slot)
Sunday, August, 13th: 9am – 9pm (two hour slot)

PRE-SCREENING & AUDITION: To inquire about participating in the audition, follow these steps:
1) E-mail Justina Grayman at justina.kamiel@gmail.com with the title “BMIA Audition – Young Dancer”
2) Confirm that you will be able to attend all dates listed above (two rehearsal dates and all tentative film shoot dates). In some instances, I may allow absences; please indicate what date you are unable to attend if applicable.
3) Include a reel OR 2 minute excerpt of prior acting or dance performance. If any video is longer than 2 minutes, include a time interval of 2 minutes or less for me to watch. Include only one video.
4) Include a headshot and resume.
5). Write two sentences about why you would like your child to be considered for the project. That’s it!

DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER/PRODUCER: Justina Grayman is a movement creator, dancer, and athlete with a background in contemporary/modern dance, gymnastics, and track and field. Most recently, she was a company member in STREB Extreme Action Company and performed in Drop at BAM with Kristin Sudeikis Dance. Justina aims to create raw, dynamic movement that allows us to explore/express our inner struggles, our contention with obstacles that seem to control us, and what is possible for us individually and collectively.
