A young man sees his manic/depressive mother for the first time in five years and is shocked to find that she is now med-compliant and under control. Despite initial anxieties, seeing this transformation inspires him to open up about his own issues and, in doing so, face the road ahead.
BART [MALE] [17]
A lost and tortured loner in the way a lot of teenagers are, but bipolar, so the feelings are much more emphasized. He’s terrified of losing his grip the way his mother did when he was growing up and it drives him into a depression. After a failed suicide attempt, he only grows more despondent and distanced from his family. JEANNIE [FEMALE] [40s-50s]
A born adventurer, she’s the type of person who was never meant to be contained, so a mental illness like bipolar disorder almost feels complimentary. When she was first diagnosed, there weren’t many options as far as treatment, so she spent many years avoiding meds and therapy altogether. It took leaving her family and going out on her own for her to find a routine and a path forward. She wants that for Bart, but knows he has to want it too. RILEY [FEMALE] [18]
Soul and attitude of a punk rocker, her anachronistic energy tends to rub people the wrong way, but she genuinely doesn’t care. Her and Bart were best friends, but she’s distanced herself since his diagnosis, fearful of what she might have to see him go through.
