THE LONG, SLOW DEATH OF A THIRTY-SOMETHING, A DARK COMEDY

Synopsis:
The Long, Slow Death of a Thirty-Something is a dark comedy that follows Ben Baker, a depressed idealist and single father who is lost in his own head as 40 rapidly approaches. When Ben is offered a mysterious drink with the power to soothe his existential worries, he becomes addicted, adopting a simplistic and small-minded worldview that results in success and popularity in all aspects of his life, but perhaps at the cost of his humanity.

Character BIOS:

ADAM BAKER (10-11, caucasian)
The son of Ben Baker, Adam is an intelligent but quiet and perhaps even troubled kid, often lost in a daydream or thoughts too deep for one his age.

WHITNEY (50’s)
Whitney is a ruthless and conservative-minded business woman, in charge of finances for celebrity athlete and small town hero Michael “The Messiah” Silverman. Every calculated risk or venture carried out by Michael Silverman Enterprises receives Whitney’s full attention, and there’s no depth to which she wouldn’t sink in order to ensure her client’s (and her own) continued financial success.

DAVID (30’s)
Graceless but cunning in his way, David Dany is in charge of branding for celebrity athlete and small town hero Mike “The Messiah” Silverman, meaning it’s his job to ensure that fan approval for “The Messiah” is always on the up and up. While he might have been a good man in another life, mastering the art of manipulating public perception has claimed any shred of integrity he might have once had.

LISA (60ish)
Lisa is the mother of Tom, her thirty-something son who still lives at home with her and her husband, Gary. Lisa is the epitome of a push-over and whenever Gary and Tom begin to argue about the living situation, Lisa does anything possible to appease both sides.

(COUNT) GRAMPA (50’s)
Sam is father to Madelyne, the mother of Ben Baker’s son Adam, making Sam Adam’s grandpa. Sam and his wife are of the belief that their grandson, a picture of purity and innocence, can simply do no wrong. They see any attempts Ben makes to correct or punish his child as an act of cruelty and fascism, and seek to undermine or thwart such attempts by any means necessary.

GRAMMA (WITCH) (50’s)
While she’s technically not a real “witch” and only wears the costume while attending a Halloween Party, Gramma is still so overprotective of her grandson Adam and hostile toward his father Ben that it can be hard to tell the difference.

GARY (60ish)
Gary dreams of being a happy camper, enjoying the final years of working before sailing off into the sunset of retirement with his wife Lisa. The only thing in the way of all of this, however, is their deadbeat thirty-something son Tom and his refusal to get a job and move out. On any given day, the mere sight of his apathetic, uninspired son is enough to send Gary into a fit of rage.

THE MESSIAH (40ish, African American, athletic)
Michael “The Messiah” Silverman came from a broken home in a bad neighborhood but rose to fame as a multi-time Superbowl winner and NFL Hall of Famer. Action figures, movie roles, the works: The Messiah has seen and done it all. If the stories are true, he lives and breathes for the sole purpose of giving back to the children who cheer him, and his recent bid for mayor of his hometown of Rose Hill is not done as a power play, but rather as an expression of that love.

REVEREND COREY (70’s)
Rose Hill’s oldest and most trusted reverend, the aging Corey struggles to know which bible verses are appropriate and inspiring, and which might inadvertently strike fear and terror into those in need of a pick-me-up.

NOREEN (40ish)
One look at Noreen’s soccer-mom haircut and minivan gives you a good idea of what to expect. As chairman of her local Christian Moms Against Censorship chapter, Noreen lives for two things: to make sure free speech is protected as long as it isn’t anti-Christian, and to know everybody in town’s own personal business.
