Theater Auditions for “The Big Five-oh” in North Beach, Maryland

Prepare for a comedic journey into the realm of midlife crises! George Thomas is about to hit the big five-oh on a looming Saturday, but the week leading up to this milestone birthday has been nothing short of disastrous. From a ailing dog to a lackadaisical son and a daughter eyeing an unexpected political alliance, George finds himself facing a cascade of challenges. With a neurotic wife and a widowed neighbor adding to the chaos, this might just be the worst week of his life. Amidst the turmoil, George will navigate the complexities of family, the trials of parenthood, and the consequences of his latest physical examination.

“The Big Five-Oh” unfolds as a side-splitting yet poignant narrative, offering a glimpse into the life of a mature man as he grapples with the realities of aging, reevaluates his relationship with his son, and contemplates his future. Brace yourself for a heartwarming and humorous exploration of one man’s journey to embrace adulthood in the midst of life’s challenges.

 

Roles:
(3 Men, 4 Women)

MARIE THOMAS- Loving wife of George Thomas, late 40s or 50 years old. Director Notes: She is a horrible cook, making her the butt of some jokes throughout the play. She should be prepared to be a little defensive while maintaining her sunny disposition. (195 lines)

GEORGE THOMAS- A professor of sociology, 50 years old. Director Notes: He is nervous about his latest physical, upset about his beloved cat being ill and completely frustrated with the choices his kids are making and the awful cooking of his wife. He is also stressed out believing that one of his female college students has the hots for him. (299 lines)

JULIE THOMAS- Daughter of Marie and George, 25 years old. Director Notes: She is excited about the prospect of getting married-to anyone, even her much older fiancé and does everything she can to keep the peace and keep up appearances throughout the play. (152 lines)

ERIC THOMAS- Son of Marie and George, 22 years old. Director Notes: He is a freeloader. He doesn’t work, but plays in a band. He has zero game with the ladies and his awkwardness is super apparent and hysterical. (293 lines)

DOUGLAS- Julie’s fiancé’, 44 years old. Director Notes: He is a divorced father of 3, who is nervous about meeting the parents of his much younger fiancé’. He spends his entire first scene completely blitzed drunk. (52 lines)

KATHY WALTERS- Widowed neighbor, sweet, grandmotherly type, 65 years old. Director Notes: She carries the ashes of her late husband, Steve, with her everywhere she goes. But, she has a secret that is eventually revealed to another character, which completely liberates her later in the show. (58 lines)

SARAH DONAVAN- Student of George’s, 19 years old. Director Notes: She is a college student, who shows up unexpectedly at George’s house. But, her reasoning may not be what it seems and she makes a friend along the way. (65 lines)

Auditions will be on Feb. 3 & 4 from 1 pm to 3 pm, at the Boys & Girls Club, 9021 Dayton Avenue, North Beach.
