Auditions announced for Altarena’s Playhouse in Alameda, CA, fall production of “The Wisdom of Eve”

Altarena Playhouse is seeking talented actors for their upcoming production of The Wisdom of Eve, written by Mary Orr and directed by Kimberly Ridgeway. This compelling drama, which inspired the classic 1950 film All About Eve and the hit Broadway musical Applause, offers a captivating glimpse into the cutthroat world of Broadway theater.
Performance Dates: October 24 – November 23, 2025
Rehearsals Begin: September 3, 2025
Location: Altarena Playhouse, 1409 High Street, Alameda, CA
Compensation: $400 reimbursement for expenses
Non-AEA Only – Casting is open to performers of all races, ethnicities, and gender identities.
About the Play:
Set in 1946, The Wisdom of Eve follows the story of Margo Crane, a celebrated Broadway star, whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Eve Harrington — a seemingly shy, devoted fan. However, behind Eve’s modest demeanor lies an ambitious, calculating young woman willing to do anything to achieve stardom. As Eve ingratiates herself into Margo’s inner circle, the drama intensifies, revealing the harsh realities of life in the theater world. This play is a riveting tale of ambition, betrayal, and the pursuit of fame.

Available Roles:
EVE HARRINGTON (Female, 20-30, any ethnicity)
A cunning and ambitious young woman who is willing to manipulate and deceive to achieve her dream of becoming a Broadway star. Appears sweet, humble, and unassuming, but beneath the surface lies a calculated and relentless drive for success.
MARGO CRANE (Female, 45, any ethnicity)
A legendary Broadway actress who thrives on the spotlight but is growing increasingly insecure about aging and maintaining her star status. Strong, charismatic, and commanding, she is deeply devoted to her career but struggles with personal fulfillment.
KAREN ROBERTS (Female, 45-50, any ethnicity)
Margo’s best friend and the wife of Lloyd. Grounded, supportive, and often the voice of reason, she finds herself caught in the drama as Eve’s true intentions come to light.
LEILA/VERA FRANKLIN (Female, 20-30, any ethnicity)
Leila: Margo’s devoted and fiercely loyal dresser, who protects Margo at all costs.
Vera Franklin: An up-and-coming actress with genuine talent and a bright future, who serves as the complete opposite of Eve. Both roles will be played by the same actor.
LLOYD ROBERTS (Male, 45-55, any ethnicity)
A dedicated playwright who consistently writes star-making roles for Margo. Though he cares deeply for his wife, his professional relationship with Margo often takes precedence, and his ego makes him vulnerable to Eve’s manipulation.
CLEMENT HOWELL/BERT HINKLE (Male, 40-55, any ethnicity)
Clement: A sophisticated and wealthy theater investor, married to Margo, who grows weary of her behavior but remains tolerant.
Bert Hinkle: A smooth-talking theatrical agent with a reputation as a ladies’ man. Both roles will be played by the same actor.
HARVEY (Male, 30-40, any ethnicity)
Margo’s stage manager. Although married, he often behaves as if he’s single. Eager to please Margo, but his own ambitions sometimes cloud his judgment.
“TALLEY HO” THOMPSON (Any Gender, 35+, any ethnicity)
A cunning and manipulative newspaper columnist always looking for the next big scandal or headline in the theater world. Quick-witted and sharp, they are constantly on the hunt for drama.
Important Notes:
- Line-Heavy Roles: Please note that the roles of Eve, Margo, and Karen require heavy line memorization.
- Intimacy Notice: Some scenes require intimate moments between the following characters: Eve, Margo, Clement, Karen, Lloyd, and Harvey. Intimacy choreography will be handled respectfully and professionally.
- Non-AEA Production: This is a non-union production. Performers will receive a $400 reimbursement for expenses.
