AURA CURIATLAS PHYSICAL THEATRE Auditions in Chicago and DC

AUDITION FOR AURA CURIATLAS PHYSICAL THEATRE

Location: email submissions, call backs in Washington, D.C. and Chicago, IL

Type: Dance

Aura Curiatlas Physical Theatre is looking for new performers and company members! If interested, please read this entire document – it contains a lot of useful info.

About the Company:
Aura Curiatlas is creating and expanding a new performance form combining dance, theatre, and acrobatics to tell stories that generate a sense of discovery and delight.

We find magic in ordinary situations presented in unusual ways. Our work resonates both with those interested in our mix of dance, theatre, and acrobatic disciplines who may be inspired to create their own cross-platform work, as well as audience members with less exposure to the arts who are drawn into our characters and situations. We value a relationship with our audience that is based on community, openness, and play. With each new work, we find different ways to tell stories, create worlds, and expose audiences to new artistic and physical disciplines, keeping qualities of strength, lightness, and play at the center.

Aura Curiatlas is not based in one location. With company members scattered throughout the country, we value the skills and creativity of our company members more highly than the convenience of their location.

To see a sampling of our work, check out our short teaser video (http://youtu.be/YZhYfd-ejkk), our longer repertory video (http://youtu.be/jzMi3BWFKM4), and our website (http://www.ACPhysicalTheatre.com).

What we’re looking for:
We want people who love to move, have a strong connection with their body, and feel confident in their ability to tell a story physically. We also want people who invest themselves in art, who are willing to talk about art, and want to make art with others, who are skilled in giving and receiving criticism, taking risks, listening, and supporting each other. We want people who strive for reason, motivation, and clarity, not just form and aesthetics.

We value training in dance and physical theatre forms, acrobatics, circus, yoga, and other practices of bodily control and expression. You don’t need to have all of those backgrounds though – a willingness to learn can be just as valuable!

What’s the audition process like?
Great question.

Step 1: Submit. Introduce yourself to us. Send us:
– A letter telling us why you’re interested in working with Aura Curiatlas and what skills you bring to the table. We like to learn new things, too!
– A resume, including your training and performance experience.
– Maybe a couple photos, a headshot, or stills of dance/acro/other work.
– And a link to a video. The video should be no longer than 5 minutes and should include demonstrations of any physical skills you think are valuable to the company, as well as something you’ve created yourself – a story, an act, a choreography. We perform without words, so please do not send monologues or spoken word.
– Please also indicate which of the audition dates/locations work for you.

Step 2: Audition. If we think you might be a good fit for the company, we’ll invite you to our auditions! At the audition, we’ll have you prepare a little something and we’ll teach you a little something. We’ll get to know each other in the studio, see how you work and perform, and see how you handle some of our material.

Step 3: Callbacks. If necessary, we may invite you back for an individual or small group callback to learn a piece of our repertoire.

Step 4: Perform! We may then invite you to perform with us at an upcoming concert, taking on roles that already exist in our rep. AC will provide transportation and housing for rehearsals and performances, as well as a small stipend.

Step 5: Join! At this point, so much depends on how well you and we work together and get along. We were very specific with the original formation of the company, choosing people with the right skills and creative sensibilities, but also the right personalities to mesh together. If we think (and you think) the fit is right, then we’ll invite you to join the company as a permanent member!

Audition Dates & Cities:
Washington D.C. – March 15, 2015
Chicago – March 21, 2015

Payment:
Let’s be honest. We’re not in this for the money, but we promise that being a part of this company won’t COST you anything – we will handle your travel and accommodations for all rehearsals and performances away from where you live. Beyond that, we do offer small stipends for performances.
