A CHANGE GON’ COME

A Change Gon’ Come is an emotionally charged original play written by Kashi-Tara, & Directed and Choreographed by Kelly Chauncey & Kashi Tara. In 2013 the production toured to Auburn, New York at the request of the family of Harriet Tubman, The Harriet Tubman Boosters Club and Cayuga Community College. In 2012 the production toured to Penniburg, Hamburg and Berlin Germany at the request of the Mayor of Penniburg and The Alexander Plat theater festival. A Change Gon’ Come is a heart-pounding, non-stop journey into the life of Harriet Tubman. It explores and exposes the intricacies of slave families, love, pain, death and indeed triumph.

  • COMEDIC MONOLGUES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  • ALL ACTORS SHOULD COME DRESSED FOR CHOREOGRAPHY.

Harriet Tubman

Dynamic, Actor able to embody the fullness of this strong, caring, demanding, loving hero. Must be a strong multi layered actor with a firm grasp of living in the moment and exposing the vulnerability and courage required to bring Harriet to life. Must be able to firmly grasp a wide variety of choreographic styles (African, Hip-Hop & Some Modern)

John Silas Tubman

Strong, sensitive yet resolute in his demands and decisions. Actor must be able to convey the totality of his struggles while torn between his own insecurities, fear of running and unyielding love for Harriet. Must be able to firmly grasp a wide variety of choreographic styles (African, Hip-Hop & Some Modern)

Bess

Larger then life Matriarch. The glue that holds this family of slaves together. Bess is the Pulse. Commanding, deliberate and unapologetic about her belief that “THE TIME TO RUN IS NOW!”

Nia/Nelly (Harriet’s older Sister)

Has been looking out for Harriet all her life. They share the tightest and strongest of spiritual and emotion bonds. Nelly is often the calming spirit in this storm of conflict, yet she too has doubts, fears and struggles with the decision to run.

Must be able to firmly grasp a wide variety of choreographic styles (African, Hip-Hop & Modern)

Lacey

Very strong, yet unassuming, she has a son, so she is faced with not only what is best for herself but ultimately what is best for her son JoJo. She is cautiously, supportive and very cerebral in her choices and decisions. Lacey, truly wants freedom, but doesn’t really know if she has what it takes physically and emotionally to grasp it. Not afraid to “stand toe to toe” for what she believes.

William Still

Known as the father of the Underground Railroad. Commanding yet sensitive. Well aware of what it takes to decide to run but believes firmly in his route and plan to return and free many more. Teacher and Preacher rooted in his soul and unafraid to stand up for what and who he believes in. Must be able to firmly grasp a wide variety of choreographic styles (African, Hip-Hop)

Slave Overseer/Officer Riley

Caucasian male

Embodies the ruthless nature of being a slave keeper. Very comfortable in his inhumane, mistreatment of slaves and is unapologetic. Actor must be able to channel the grit, nastiness and “supremely racist” nature of such a person. Actor also plays Officer Riley. An equally gritty slave catching officer of the law with seemingly no respect for freed slaves or William Still. Actor must be able to play two very different roles that share a very similar thru-line and purpose. Must be able to grasp some Hip-hop and current movement styles. 25-60

Jake/Leonard-African American male, mulatto slave and ensemble, dance abilities, youthful spirit, teenager, 16-18
(older actor considered, if able to convey youth)

Gertie- African American female, sister of Jake and ensemble, dance abilities, sassy, flippant, nosey, 12-15
(older actor considered, if able to convey youth)

JoJo or Josie (Male/Female) – African American child (male/female), son or daughter of Lacey and ensemble, dance abilities, innocent, independent, 7-12

Mrs. Mendenhall-Caucasian female, Abolitionist and wife of Thomas Garrett, dance abilities preferred but not mandatory, compassionate, just, 25-40
