AUDITION: A Raisin in the Sun

Synopsis: This short film is an adapted scene from the Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. In the short Walter’s wife, Ruth left him and took his son, Travis. His mother, Lena passed away. Walter’s life is slipping through his fingers. To earn money, Walter takes a job as a chauffer for a wealthy couple, who he vicariously lives through. The couple has to make a grave decision regarding their family. This drives Walter mad. However, he must bite his tongue if he wants to prove to his wife he is not a failure. But he is slipping away from reality quickly.

Roles Available:

Walter Younger: Male (20s) His face is chiseled. When shaved, he is pristine. But life has beaten him down, and his scruffy physical appearance is rebellion to the pressures of the world. Tattoos and piercing are welcome.

Ruth Younger: Female (20s) Her beauty is enticing. She represents a time when Walter’s life was controlled and simple. She embodies everything to which Walter is fighting to return.

Winny: Female (30s+) A woman who is caught in the cross hairs of Walters’ physical reality and his hallucination.s Walter’s interaction with Winny signals the beginning of his downward spiral to a breakdown.

Travis Younger: Male (10-14) He is next in the bloodline of failures. Walter sees Travis is his redemption.

Lena Younger: Female (30s-40s) She serves as the matriarch of the family. She is what held the family together. After her passing, Walter couldn’t step up and hold the pieces together. She represents love and unity.

Bobo: Male (20s) He is a drug dealer that serves as a gateway to Walter’s fantasy life.

Karl Linder: Male (40s) He is a community leader that wants to keep Travis out of moving into an affluent neighborhood. He is also a figment of Travis’ imagination.

George Murchinson: Male (20s) He is dangerously arrogant and terribly materialistic. He measures his life’s worth by what he can accumulate. His appearance changes with the trends currently he is a hipster.

Beneatha Murchinson: Female (20s) She comes from poverty. Metaphorically she has one foot in her past and the other in the new life that she has worked so hard to attain. But she is not fulfilled and bringing a child into this world of unhappiness terrifies her.
