General Information
The Grand Theatre, located at 1575 South State Street, Salt Lake City, will be holding auditions for “The Skin of Our Teeth” by Thornton Wilder on Saturday, January 3, 2015. The auditions will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be held in the Annex, located at 1610 South 250 East, in the south east corner of the South City Campus.

Mark Fossen will be directing the production and it will run March 12 through 28, 2015 at the Grand Theatre. Rehearsals will begin February 7. Rehearsals (apart from tech week) will be Monday-Friday from 6pm to 10pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Those wishing to audition will need to call the box office at 801.957.3322, or visit the website below to schedule an audition time. Each actor will have a 5 minute time slot. Men and women of all ethnic backgrounds and ages are encouraged to audition.

Each person who auditions should prepare a monologue from a classic American play (such as O’Neill, Williams, Miller, Kaufmann & Hart), or a provided side from “The Skin of Our Teeth” Memorization is encouraged, but not necessary.

About the Show:

Completed by the author less than a month after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, “The Skin of Our Teeth” (1942) broke from established theatrical conventions and walked off with the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Combining farce, burlesque, and satire, and elements of the comic strip, Thornton Wilder depicts an Everyman Family as it narrowly escapes one end-of-the-world disaster after another, from the Ice Age to flood to war.

Roles:

  •  Sabina (F, 20-40): Antrobus’s maid, beauty queen, temptress.
  •  Mrs. Antrobus (F, 40-60): Mother—the glue that holds the family together. Her motto is “Save the family.”
  •  Gladys (F, Teens – 20s): Daughter—the perfect child and her mother makes sure it stays that way.
  •  Fortune Teller (F, 40-80): Mystic – wisely proclaims that it is easier to decipher the future than the past.
  •  Fitzpatrick (M/F, 20+): The stage manager, stops the play from time to time to make adjustments as needed.
  •  Henry (M, Teens – 20s): Son—the representation of our capacity for evil. Sullen and broody.
  •  Mr. Antrobus (M, 40-60): Father—when he isn’t inventing the alphabet or the wheel, George is struggling to keep his family’s head above water as well as save the world.
  •  9 Ensemble roles to play multiple roles of various ages and genders including mid-teens woman, young boy (~12 years old), puppeteering opportunities, and more.
