“Going Home” Seeks Union & Non-Union Actors

Location: Trenton, NJ

Type: Film

Submissions for indie feature film “Going Home”.

Logline: Facing death, one elderly woman abandons medical care, choosing simply to live before she dies.

Synopsis: Ninety years old, Mrs. Majors is in terrible health. Her bones have degenerated and her hip is shattered. Walking should be impossible. Degenerative heart disease has taken all but ten percent of her heart function. She would die on the table were surgery attempted to repair her hip. Her medical options have been narrowed to occupying a bed in a convalescent center until she stops breathing.
Instead, she embarks on a cross country trip to live out her last dream. Assisting her in this insanity are five of her many children and a daughter-in-law. The decision to honor her wishes is not unanimous among her offspring. It is a divided house. For those who transport her, love and pride for her decision war with dread of the guilt they will face. Should she die in their care? On this odyssey of the heart, time is the enemy. And the best laid plans seem to come to naught. Triumphs and tragedies alter their plans and itinerary. Hope and laughter are interspersed with the tears.

On this trip back to her roots, Mrs. Majors comes back to life. On her journey back home, she touches and changes the lives of everyone she encounters. Her children will see, unfolding before their eyes, the best of a woman they only knew in part. Ultimately the question comes down to this. How then should we die? The answer to this question is explored by patients, families, and medical personnel as her journey progresses. And that’s important. Because the answer will also determine how we should live. Mrs. Majors’ second to last desire is to visit her home church once more. To accomplish her dream will require the greatest sacrifice her children could’ve ever feared. The fulfillment of her final wish may require another life besides this one.

Indie film “Going Home” is seeking non union and SAG/AFTRA actors and actresses headshots, resumes, and reels for the following roles:

LEAD ROLE

Mrs. Majors, African American, 80-90 years old is well aware she is dying and is mostly all right with that. She is just tired and thinks a lot about going home. She has no intention of ending her time in pain in a hospital bed. So she convinces some of her children to take her on a cross country trip where she touches the lives of everyone she encounters.

SUPPORTING ROLE

Mary, African American, late forties is the voice of reason. The one afraid to take a chance. Paralyzed by fear of guilt should the inevitable occur because she agreed to apparent insanity. She represents the frightened part of the family.

SUPPORTING ROLE

Laura, African American, Sixties, shares caregiver responsibilities with Mary and Darlene. It was on her watch that Mrs. Majors fell and broke her hip. She was the one who called for an ambulance despite Mom’s wishes to the contrary. Guilt drives her to be the prognosticator of doom if the boys take Mom on the trip.

SUPPORTING ROLE:

Darlene, African American, late fifties is also a caregiver, but realistic about the upcoming end of her Mom’s life. She is willing to do whatever is needed to make that as enjoyable as possible for her Mom. She agrees to go on the trip to handle the female needs of her mother.

SUPPORTING ROLE

Teresa, African American, is in her early fifties.
Her agreement to join them on the trip and care for the dying woman makes the whole thing possible. Her worry is a reminder, throughout the story, that while what they are doing seems fun, it will probably have grave consequences.

SUPPORTING ROLE

Jonathon, African American, mid fifties is more than willing to help Mom seize whatever life she has left. He is a peacemaker in the family and a voice most will listen to. And he just gets whatever needs to be done, done.

SUPPORTING ROLE

Joseph, African American, early sixties is the leader of the family since their father passed away. When he decides to take his mother on her trip, most line up behind them. And when he makes a commitment, Joey follows through.

SUPPORTING ROLE

James, African American, mid fifties is a facilitator. He is the problem solver on the trip. And he is proud of his mother for her decision. She has always been one of his heroes.

SUPPORTING ROLE

Thomas, African American, muscular, late fifties is the muscle that makes the trip possible. He is the one who modifies the van to transport Mom. And he will take chances necessary to see her dreams come true. Whatever Mom needs done.

DAY PLAYER

Dr. Amir, Arabic, early sixties is the doctor who gives Mrs. Majors tacit permission to go on her trip. Even knowing it will likely kill her.
