Down By the River

“Down By the River” is about a young teenage girl, named Audrey struggling with her state of mind, future, and spirituality. After her father died, Audrey’s mother had to marry another man in order to secure a rich future for her. Unfortunately, Audrey’s stepfather is abusive and is pushing Audrey to get baptized. The film is about sacrifice and how conforming may sometimes be the only way out.

Michael is a middle aged Oil and Gas Site Supervisor. He is well off and thinks very highly of himself. He was born and raised in North Carolina and took an interest in Audrey’s mother, Ranae, when he met her at the diner where she worked. As soon as he saw her, he had to have her. Michael married Ranae and forced her and Audrey to convert to Baptist. His ego is large and his need for control is satisfied through Ranae and Audrey. Now, he is forcing Audrey to be baptized as a means to control her even more.

Ranae is a kind-hearted and quiet soul. She fell in love with her first husband, Christopher, at the age of 16. They married at 18 and had their daughter, Audrey. Christopher became a firefighter and took care of Ranae and Audrey. Ranae believed that she had her fairytale life. She was loved unconditionally and she felt at peace. When Audrey was 13, Christopher died in a rescue mission. Ranae was devastated. She knew that she would never feel at peace again. She struggled through depression and worked to put food on the table for Audrey. She couldn’t get enough money to keep her house and she didn’t know how she was going to send Audrey to college. She was broken. But one day, she met Michael at the diner in which she worked. Michael took an immediate interest In her and Ranae knew at that moment, she was going to have to sacrifice a lot in order to give Audrey the life he deserved.
[PASTOR TIMOTHY] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 40-50]
Pastor Timothy is the pastor of a small town Baptist church with a congregation of about 200 people. He is soft spoken and a bit passive. He has been alone for most of his life and takes comfort in his relationship with God. He has known Michael for quite a long time and knows him to be a headstrong man. Pastor Timothy senses that Audrey is very reluctant to be baptized and sympathizes with her, but is unable to voice his feelings or come up with any solutions. In the end, he knows that is how it’s supposed to be, that God has a plan set out for Audrey even if it seems unsettling at the moment.
