Flying Lessons

Location: Baltimore

Type: Film

Casting the LEAD in a micro-budget feature film.

Location: Darlington, MD (1 hour north of Baltimore)

Filming Dates: June 28 – July 3rd and August 16-20

Role: TALIA
25 to 35 years old, Black female. Queer. Talia is fiercely independent and deeply cynical. After a childhood of tokenism and isolation, she finally built a life in NYC that celebrates her black and queer identities. She’s a respected musician in a loving relationship and feels completely at home in the city.

So when Talia is dragged back to her conservative, rural hometown and discovers that she is the legal guardian of her autistic sister – whom she has no relationship with – her every instinct is to flee.

While processing grief and struggling with her new role as caregiver, Talia learns how to see her sister not as a problem to be solved, but as someone she is proud to call family.

Storyline:
After the unexpected death of their adoptive mother, two estranged and incompatible sisters are alone together for the very first time: Beatrice, an autistic Chinese teenager who wants to learn to fly; and Talia, a queer black woman with no such penchant for fairy-tales.

Logistics:
Travel, accommodation (if not local to the Baltimore area), and food will be paid for by production. Actors will receive a percentage of any future net-profits of the film.

SPECIAL NOTE:
The role of BEATRICE (younger sister) will be played by an autistic woman. All applicants should be open to/sensitive towards a neurodiverse work environment, and be comfortable with dramatic improvisation, as some scenes will go off-script.
