The Manor Club Theatre (TMCT) announces AUDITIONS for “THE HEIRESS” – Pelham Manor, N.Y.

NON-UNION Open Call THE HEIRESS by Ruth and Augustus Goetz and Directed by Donna Bellone

Based on the Henry James novel, (Washington Square), The Heiress is set in 1850 New York City and follows the story of Catherine, a plain but exceedingly wealthy young woman who lives with her father, Dr. Austin Sloper. When she falls in love with Morris Townsend, a charming but penniless suitor, Dr. Sloper is immediately suspicious the man is after Catherine’s inheritance. What follows is a gothic romance filled with mystery and drama.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: 6 WOMEN / 3 MEN

Catherine Sloper – (20-26) Daughter of Dr. Sloper. Painfully shy and plain woman. Central character of the play.

Morris Townsend (25-30) Suitor to Catherine. Exceptionally good looking, charming with mysterious intentions.

Dr. Austin Sloper- (55-65) A physician in New York City, father of Catherine. Stern and pragmatic.

Lavinia Penniman – (45-65) Widowed sister of Dr. Sloper and Catherine’s aunt who lives in the household. Cheerful, romantic, and energetic

Maria (18-25) The Sloper’s parlor maid. Integral to the movement of the play Appears in every scene and appears throughout each scene change.

Elizabeth Almond – (45-65) Weil-to-do sister of Dr. Sloper and Lavinia. Charming and easy-going. Appears in two (2) scenes.

Marian Almond – (20-27) Elizabeth Almond’s daughter, niece to Dr. Sloper and Lavinia. Catherine’s cousin. Newly engaged to be married. Charming, vivacious. Appears in two (2) scenes.

Mrs. Montgomery-(30-45) Devoted older sister of Morris Townsend. Appears in one (1) scene.

Arthur Townsend (30-35) Businessman. Marian’s Fiancé and Morris’s cousin. Appears in one (1) scene (Act 1, Scene 1) and offstage voice in Act 2, Scene 3. Possibly double as Stage Manager (stipend offered)

REHEARSALS: Start first week in February. Three (3) nights per week and one (1) weekend day, either a Saturday or Sunday. Not all cast will be called for every rehearsal however Principals should expect more rehearsals. Exact dates to be determined.
