About the film:
Mayor Shon Harris of Yuba City is taking a unique approach to address the issue of homelessness through a community filming project titled “The Road to Resilience.” In an effort to illuminate the complex problems leading to and perpetuating homelessness, both locally and globally, Harris will be making a movie in Yuba City.

According to a local site, Harris had interviewed over 30 unhoused individuals and using their stories, created a script that intricately weaves together the common themes and struggles he discovered during his investigations. The aim is to capture the humanity of these individuals and shed light on the challenges they face, providing an understanding of the factors that led them to their current circumstances.

The story primarily centers around a woman and her young daughter. Following the loss of financial stability due to domestic violence issues, the young woman grapples with finding support, even from her own family. The project offers around 40 character roles, welcoming participants of all ages, genders, ethnicities, and experience levels. Crew members are also sought, and participants may be eligible for a stipend.

Bethany Harris Graham, Harris’ daughter and collaborator, emphasizes that the film’s purpose is to increase awareness of homelessness from the perspective of those experiencing it. Funding for the project comes in part from the California Arts Council through the Upstate California Creative Corps grant initiative. Harris secured approximately $26,000, which will contribute to both production costs and the employment of unhoused individuals during filming.

An open casting call is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts in Yuba City.
