Evening Star Productions is casting for the following roles for an upcoming production of A RAISIN IN THE SUN.
MAMA (LENA) YOUNGER: Looking for an African American Woman in her Mid 40’s-Mid 60’s to play a woman in her mid-50’s to early 60’s. She is the matriarch of the Younger Family. She considers it her job to keep her family anchored and grounded in otherwise turbulent times. Her ideals are from the old-school when she was in her prime, and moving from the south to a better life up north. They do not always coincide with her children’s who are trying to discover themselves in a modern world where times are shifting. EVERYTHING that she does for her family is out of love, and it is that love that she uses to hold them together. The actress who wins this role must have a strong, commanding presence that is dignified, but not at all over-powering.
JOSEPH ASAGAI: Looking for an African American Man in his mid 20’s to early 30’s to play this role.
He is one of Beneatha’s suitors. He is Tall, Dark, Handsome and “other worldy” (he comes from Africa). He challenges Beneatha on her thoughts, and opinions, and the way that she sees the world in general. It is never mean or sarcastic, but always stimulating and inviting. He is a respectful young man who wants to make a difference in the world somehow.
*special note: when auditioning for this role it is not a requirement to do so with an accent, but the actor will have to pick up the dialect if they do not have it in their repertoire already.
