David Mamet’s 1984 Pulitzer Prize winning play, Glengarry Glen Ross, is about the struggles of four shady small-time salesmen in a small branch of a larger real estate company located in Chicago. Taking place over two business days, the play portrays the dog-eat-dog world of real estate and the ends ruthless salesmen will go to in order to sell overpriced and undesirable land to uninterested and reluctant potential buyers. The cutthroat conniving salesmen resort to trickery, bribery, deceit, lying, and theft. This dark play successfully illustrates the social Darwinistic nature of the shady world of real estate in a big city and the Darwinian rules of the desperate salesmen’s game.

BREAKDOWNS:

Richard “Ricky” Roma – The most successful salesman in the office and regards his ability to make a sale as a sign of his virility, he admits to himself that it is all luck. He is ruthless, dishonest and immoral, sexy, strong and confident but succeeds because he has a talent for figuring out a client’s weaknesses and crafting a pitch that will exploit those weaknesses. He is witty, charming, a smooth talker and a man other men want to be. Must exude sexy confidence. 35-45 age range

Shelly “The Machine” Levene – A once-successful salesman, under dog, who has fallen on hard times and has not closed a big deal in a long time and finds himself in danger of getting fired. He desperately wants to save his career, and this desperation is usually grotesquely apparent. Very likable and seen as an everyman until we see what transpires at the end of the play. 40-60 age range

James Lingk – A timid, middle-aged man who becomes Roma’s latest client. Lingk is easily manipulated and finds Roma highly charismatic. Upon consulting his wife, he becomes desperate to regain the money that Roma has closed on him. 40-50 age range

John Williamson – The stoic office manager and main antagonist. The salesmen despise Williamson and look down on him, but need him desperately because he’s the one who hands out the sales leads. He is confident, dis-engaged and just wants the deals done. A A thick skinned keeper of the zoo. 35- 50 age range

George Aaronow – A gentile man with low self-esteem who lacks confidence and hope, and with a conscience which probably what makes him a bad salesman. Bottom of the sales list and a nervous character. Ironically, he and Roma end up the remaining two salesmen for the firm after Shelley is found out, and gives up Moss as his co-conspirator. Looking for someone with comic timing to grab the subtle jabs and rhythms of this character – Open on age range.

Dave Moss – A big-mouthed salesman with big dreams and schemes. Moss resents Williamson and agency owners Mitch and Murray for putting such pressure on him and plans to strike back at them by stealing all their best sales leads and selling them to a competitor. Moss sees Aaronow as a potential accomplice, and knows he can manipulate him if he doesn’t comply. Someone who liked pulling wings off a fly as a child. Alot of aggression and ambition but lacks the smoothness of Roma. 40-60 age range

Baylen – A police detective. He appears in the final act to investigate the office break-in and interrogate each cast member behind closed doors. – Open on age range range
